Glossary of Computer Terms starting with alphabet 'A'



Description

Active X

Active X is a Microsoft Technology used by web developers to create interactive web content. While ActiveX is a useful technology, you are required to have an up-to-date version of ActiveX installed on your computer to use ActiveX-enabled content.

 

ADF

ADF is acronym for 'Automatic Document Feeder'. ADF technology is used in scanners, photocopiers and other machines for automatic feeding of documents.

 

ADSL

ADSL is acronym for Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line'. ADSL technology is used for transmitting data/information over telephone lines.

 

Adware

Adware is a software free to use but requires watching advertisements to use it.

 

AGP

AGP is acronym for accelerated Graphic Port'. AGP is a port/slot on computer motherboard for inserting graphic card to improve quality of display.

 

Alert Box

An Alert Box is a small window that pops up to display warnings or messages on monitor screen. An example of alert box is that when you give command to format a floppy or any other disk, an alert box "Warning: Formatting will erase All data on this disk. To format the disk, click OK. To quit click CANCEL" is displayed. The computer will proceed as per the option 'OK' or 'CAncel' exercised by you.

 

Algorithm

Algorithm is a set of instructions or procedure written by programmers to perform a task or set of tasks.

 

Appllet

Applet is usually a small java application written for the web page to make the page dynamic and interactive.

 

Application

An application is a software program that runs on the computer. The examples of applications are word processors, web browsers, games, multimedia etc.

 

ASCII

ASCII is acronym for 'American System Code for Information Interchange and is a universal standard for using numerical codes on computers.

 

ATA

ATA is acronym for 'Advanced Technology Attachment. ATA is a type of hard disk drive that has drive controllers on the drive itself.

 

Autoresponders

A program or script that automatically responds to emails received.
